Is Lello Bookstore the most beautiful one in Porto?

Lello Bookstore Porto, officially known as Livraria Lello & Irmão, is a dream destination for book lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. It’s been called one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world by The Guardian, Lonely Planet, Time Magazine, and CNN. They all agree. And when you step inside, you will too.

And while you’re here, why stop at books? Join Porto’s longest-running food tour and taste the city’s most authentic flavors!

Stunning Neo-Gothic Façade

Located on Rua das Carmelitas 144, the exterior of Lello Bookstore Porto is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture. The façade features intricate artwork by José Bielman, depicting allegories of Arts and Science. Above the entrance, you’ll spot the name “Livraria Chardron”, the publishing house that once released works by renowned Portuguese authors Eça de Queirós and Camilo Castelo Branco.

Inside Lello Bookstore Porto

Step inside, and you’ll notice the original cart rails embedded in the floor, once used to transport books effortlessly around the store. But the true showstopper? The iconic red staircase.

Though often believed to have inspired J.K. Rowling’s Flourish and Blotts bookshop and Hogwarts’ Grand Staircase in Harry Potter, Rowling herself has debunked the myth. Still, the curved stairway and its intricately carved woodwork make for an unforgettable sight (and plenty of Instagram-worthy moments).

Above the staircase, the magnificent stained glass ceiling displays the bookstore’s Latin motto: “Decus in Labore” (Dignity in Work). Though some glass panels show signs of wear, the store’s ongoing restoration ensures its charm remains untouched.

A Book Lover’s Paradise

Visitors can find Portuguese literature, rare editions from the early 1900s, a foreign books section, and works by Portugal’s only Nobel Prize-winning author, José Saramago, available in English. Throughout the bookstore, busts of famous Portuguese writers such as Eça de Queirós, Camilo Castelo Branco, and Antero de Quental add to the literary atmosphere.

How to Visit Lello Bookstore Porto

Due to its popularity, a ticketing system is in place. Since August 2015, visitors must purchase an entry ticket. Regular customers can also sign up for the “Lello Friend” membership, a free program requiring basic personal details.

Originally designed as a “Temple to Knowledge”, Lello continues to captivate thousands of visitors each year with its breathtaking design and literary heritage.

Ricardo Brochado, founder of City Tailors, beautifully captures the essence of Lello Bookstore Porto in this blog post, now featured on the Taste Porto blog as part of the fusion between City Tailors and Taste Porto.
