If you are a general food lover, you’ve come to the right place! If you love sandwiches in particular, then I welcome you to Paradise! Do yourself a favor and taste these portuguese flavors on your visit.
BIFANA
I don’t know where you can find a “bifana” that looks remotely similar to the one that Gordon Ramsay made, but there are plenty of places that I recommend.
- Conga
THE place to try bifanas. - Taxca
Carnivores will be in their element as it is all about the meat here. - Rei das Bifanas
Sometimes the meat pieces try to fall on your plate. Don’t let them! - Snack-bar Poveiros
Their bifana is not as strongly flavored as others I have tried, but give it a go. - Fábrica da Picaria
Seriously, how is it possible that a piece of steak can fit so perfectly in a bread roll?
Bear in mind that it is near sacrilege to pair your bifana with anything other than a beer and preferably the local craft beer. If you are admonished for ordering water, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

TERYLENE
So. Much. Deliciousness. Best sandwich I’ve ever had and it’s on the Taste Porto Downtown Food Tour for you to enjoy too!

This isn’t a mere sandwich, this is a sandwich you experience with all your senses. First, you hear the wood-burning stove slowly cooking the meat. In fact, it is cooked for 24 hours before being served! Then, you see this beautiful and delicious-looking rustic bread embracing the roasted pork with a slice of smoked ham. Almost immediately, your nose tells you that it smells as good as it looks and this is when you start mouth-watering. You pick it up, feel the weight and realize that it carries a substantial amount of meat inside, and then, after taking the first bite, your palate confirms everything your others senses were already telling you:
– You have found a piece of heaven;
– Traveling has never tasted so good;
– Porto might be the perfect city for you.
FRANCESINHA
A lot of people don’t include “Francesinha” on this list. “If you can’t eat it with your hands, then it’s not a sandwich”, they say. It’s quite difficult to eat a Francesinha without a fork and a knife, that’s for sure. I’ve tried once and don’t recommend it! But what do you think: should Francesinha be included on this list or have a category of its own?

LIVER SANDWICH
Some snacks connect us not only to our food and identity but also, more importantly, to each other. A taste of Home. I love this sandwich!

Found another great sandwich while in Porto? Let me know!
Enjoy your time!
