Our guide Ângelo sums it up: “It has been a delicious adventure!”. During the day, Ângelo is a passionate storyteller of the city’s gastronomic soul; by night, he transforms into a music-loving DJ, spinning vibrant beats that make the city come alive. Keep reading to learn more from him.

20 Questions with a Taste Porto Tour Guide

  • Describe Porto in one word.

  • What’s the weirdest food and drink combo?
Eels stew and white wine, just by thinking about it I get goosebumps, and not the good kind.

  • What do you always avoid ordering on a menu?
    Aquaculture fish.

  • If you could choose any two famous Portuguese people (dead or alive) to have dinner with, who would they be and why?
I would choose Luiz Pacheco and João César Monteiro, both intelligent and controversial – one a writer and the other a film director. From that dinner maybe it would result in a collaboration for a great movie or just a very memorable evening.

  • Your friend from out of town is visiting. Where are you taking them?
It depends on what my friend is into but surely the amazing view that Porto provides us and also architecture/history, such as the Sé of Porto.

  • Do you like cooking? Which dish is your showstopper?
Not really but when I do I cook salted vegetables with either meat or mushrooms and I get wild with spices, usually it does the trick.

  • Describe yourself as a traveler in 3 words.
    Curious, communicative and an explorer.

  • What’s your favorite Portuguese comfort meal?
Alheira, if I’m feeling lazy I just stick it in the oven and that’s it.

  • What’s your favorite petisco?
    Favas com chouriço.

  • What’s the best travel advice you have ever received?
When looking for something, ask the locals – not Google.

  • Do you have a favorite quote or Portuguese traditional saying?
“No comer e coçar só custa começar” (Eating is like scratching an itch… you just have to start).

  • Complete the sentence: “A day in Porto is not complete without…”
    Tripas à moda do Porto.

  • What’s your go-to coffee order?
Single shot coffee (espresso) without any doubt.

  • What’s your most treasured memory in Porto?
The first thing that came to my mind was when I sat for the first time on the stairs next to Porto’s Cathedral (Sé do Porto), an imponent figure, and looked at the beautiful view.

  • Do you have any tips for someone who is visiting Porto for the first time?
Restaurants where you see both blue and white-collar workers are a safe bet for great food.

  • What’s the best way to spend a rainy day in Porto?
I would say Bolhão Market to try the different things it has to offer, such as wines and food, but also to engage with people who work there – they are the market after all.

  • What’s your favorite Portuguese tradition?
I love the popular festivals such as São João, that’s a frenetic way of absorbing Portuguese culture.

  • What is the most common misconception about Porto?
When people don’t know what Francesinha is and refer to it as a sandwich, which in my point of view is a hybrid of almost everything…

  • What’s your favorite craft beer bar in Porto?
My favorite is Catraio – both cool people and beer.

  • What is the secret to being an amazing tour guide?
Just enjoy yourself doing it. It’s cool to show a city, places that you love and believe in, so it kind of makes our job easy. Also, the fact that you meet people from all around the world and feel like you’re just hanging out with a friend and showing them the way you see Porto.
