What to do in Porto in September

#1 GO TO PORTO BOOK FAIR

The Porto Book Fair (Feira do Livro do Porto) is held every year at the Gardens of Palácio de Cristal in early September. Every year this event features a series of free concerts, talks, performances, exhibits, and much more for all ages. Can you think of a better way to celebrate summer’s late afternoons? We can’t!

#2 RUN LIKE THERE’S NO TOMORROW

The Meia Maratona do Porto (Porto Half Marathon) is back! Entries are now open for the race, which is taking place on the third Sunday of September, the 15th. Just a quick reminder: this competition boasts the prestigious “Bronze” title, awarded by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

#3 DRINK PORTUGUESE CRAFT BEER

If you missed the Porto Beer Fest, worry not! Some of our favorite brewers are still in town and can give you a taste of different craft beer. Here are our top picks:

#4 TAKE THE TRAM IN PORTO

Trams add charm to Porto, and many visitors are excited to ride them during their visit. These vehicles are not just transportation; they’re also pieces of history, enduring wars and historical changes. The first tram hit Porto’s streets in 1895. Ready for a ride?

#5 VISIT THE HANDICRAFT FAIR IN BATALHA

Feira de Artesanato da Batalha (Handicraft Fair in Batalha) is a must-go if you want to understand the important role played by handicrafts in the life of this city. The market operates every day from 9 am to 8 pm.

#8 WHEN IN PORTO, EAT EAT EAT

But now you may be wondering: “where do Porto foodies go to eat?“. We asked a few of our foodie friends or people we respect as foodies for their tips in Porto. This is what they said.

#9 THE HARVEST SEASON HAS ARRIVED

There is no fixed date for the Douro harvest season to start but it usually happens in the second half of September, it depends on the weather conditions throughout the year and how the vineyards have reacted to it. There are many activities available only during this season. You can participate in the harvest with the locals, help to produce wine from the grapes by stomping away, and some wineries even allow you to take home with you the “fruits” of your labor. Can you imagine sharing a bottle of wine you produced with your friends?

The harvest is one of the oldest wine activities in Portugal and certainly one of the most genuine and traditional ones. There are a number of wineries with special harvest programs. Two of the best wineries in the Douro region are Quinta do Pôpa and Quinta do Seixo, which we mention in our One Day Trip To Douro from Porto article, and both offer harvest experiences to visitors.

#10 JOIN THE FESTA DO OUTONO (AUTUMN FESTIVAL) IN SERRALVES

This event takes place on the first weekend of autumn to celebrate its arrival and is very family-friendly. Besides, it’s free. We hope to meet you there!

And there you have it, some of the best things to do in Porto this September are right here.
