If you’re lucky enough to be here that day, there’s actually much more to look forward to than the eclipse itself. Because Porto isn’t just giving you an eclipse. It’s giving you a whole night under the stars.

Here’s everything you need to know before heading out to watch the sky.

1. Can I see the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse from Porto?

Absolutely! Porto will experience a spectacular partial solar eclipse, with about 98.2% of the Sun covered at maximum. So while you won’t experience totality in Porto, almost the entire Sun will disappear behind the Moon. That’s pretty impressive for an evening in the city.

2. What time is the solar eclipse in Porto?

The eclipse will last for almost two hours, giving you plenty of time to find a good spot and settle in for the show. In Porto:

• 6:34 PM: Eclipse begins;
• 7:32 PM: Maximum eclipse, with about 98.2% coverage;
• 8:25 PM: Eclipse ends.

These are local times in Porto, so keep that in mind when planning your day. And because the eclipse happens late in the afternoon, you’ll want somewhere with a clear view towards the west.

3. Do I need to travel from Porto to Bragança to see the total solar eclipse in Portugal?

Only if experiencing totality is on your bucket list. Porto will see approximately 98% coverage, but a small area around Bragança and Montesinho Natural Park lies within the path of totality. There, the Sun will disappear completely for roughly 26 seconds, around 7:30 PM.

If you’re already visiting Porto, there’s no need to abandon your plans and spend hours traveling across Portugal just to see the eclipse. Find a beautiful spot with a wide, unobstructed view of the western sky and enjoy it from Porto.

4. Where can I watch the eclipse in Porto?

If you’re in Porto, grab your eclipse glasses and head somewhere with a wide-open view of the sky. Ideally, you’ll want a clear view towards the west.

A few Porto favorites that could make a beautiful backdrop for the eclipse:

• Foz do Douro: ocean views and plenty of open sky;
• Jardim do Morro: views across the Douro and Porto’s historic skyline;
• Passeio das Virtudes: one of our favorite spots for an evening view.

Just remember that these places are popular even on a normal summer evening. On August 12, expect them to be much busier than usual.

5. Are eclipse glasses optional?

Nope. They’re not! You can absolutely enjoy the eclipse outdoors, but never look directly at the Sun without proper solar viewing protection. Regular sunglasses aren’t enough, even when almost the entire Sun is covered. Use certified eclipse glasses or appropriate solar viewing equipment throughout the partial phases of the eclipse.

Explore the city during the day, enjoy lunch or a food experience, and then make your way towards your chosen viewing spot before the eclipse begins. And don’t rush back to your hotel afterwards. This is one of those rare evenings when staying outside a little longer is worth it. Because once the Sun disappears, the sky isn’t done putting on a show…

7. Why is everyone making such a big deal about the August 12 eclipse?

Because this is a genuinely unusual event for Portugal. August 12 will bring the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Portugal since 1912. And the next one won’t cross mainland Portugal until 2144. So yes, this really is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of event.

8. Is August 12, 2026, really going to have three astronomical events?

Yes, and this is what makes the date particularly special. You can potentially experience three very different celestial events within roughly 24 hours:

• Solar eclipse: during the evening of August 12;
• Perseid meteor shower: overnight on August 12–13;
• Six-planet alignment: before dawn.

And the timing couldn’t be much better for stargazing. The peak of the Perseid meteor shower coincides with a New Moon, meaning there’s very little moonlight to wash out the fainter meteors. In other words, you could watch the eclipse from Porto in the evening, stay out for the stars after dark and, if you’re particularly dedicated, wake up before sunrise for the planetary alignment. That’s a lot of sky for one day!

9. Can I see the Perseid meteor shower from Porto after the eclipse?

Yes! The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak around August 12–13. The important thing to remember is that the Perseids won’t be visible during the eclipse itself. You’ll need to wait until the sky is properly dark.

For the best chance of seeing shooting stars, get away from as much city light as possible. A darker spot outside central Porto will give you a much better view than a brightly lit street or busy square. Then give your eyes a little time to adjust to the darkness. No telescope required. Just look up!

10. Where can I get solar eclipse glasses in Porto?

You can look for certified solar eclipse glasses from reputable sellers, science centers, astronomy organizations or official viewing events. Just make sure they’re designed specifically for direct solar observation. Regular sunglasses are not a safe substitute.
