8 Porto restaurants where we've never spotted a tourist

Picture this:

  • No menus in five languages;
  • No lines of travelers waiting for a table;
  • No one photographing their food (okay… maybe just us).

Just daily routines, familiar faces, and traditional dishes that don’t need explaining, because they’ve been done the same way for years. Not that the rest of the city feels any less Porto… but these Porto restaurants? They hit different. And yes, they’re absolutely worth a visit.

Save this for your next trip! But here’s the deal: part of the magic of discovering these Porto restaurants is trying to order in Portuguese. It won’t always be perfect, but that’s kind of the point.

8 Porto restaurants where tourists haven’t found their way (yet)

Mirandas Kaffe

If you don’t mind waiting a bit, you’re in for a treat. This is one of those Porto restaurants where patience pays off. The finos are always fresh. The prego do lombo em pão is a classic. And the francesinha? Done properly. No excess, no reinvention, just a solid, well-balanced version with a milder, traditional sauce. No gimmicks. Just go!

Adega Braseira

One of the best tascas around Porto… and still flying under the radar. A bit outside the center, but worth it.
A traditional counter, a full room, and that feeling that everyone’s been coming here for years. Come for the petiscos (tripa enfarinhada, salada de orelha com molho verde, presunto, queijo da Serra) and stay for the atmosphere. Unpretentious, welcoming, and very, very real.

Restaurante Lider

If you want to try tripas à moda do Porto, start here. Among the many Porto restaurants serving this dish, Líder stands out. Rich, well-balanced, and served exactly as it should be: hot, generous, and full of flavor. The room is calm, the service is attentive, and everything feels quietly confident. No need to overthink it.

Restaurante Manuel Alves

You come once. Then you keep coming back. A local favorite, and one of those Porto restaurants where everything feels familiar in the best way. Traditional dishes, generous portions, and no shortcuts. Cozido à Portuguesa, Portuguese national dish, grilled squid, roasted goat… You name it! The menu changes, but the quality doesn’t. Simple food, done right. Every time.

Caetano

This is traditional Portuguese cooking at its core. Quality meats, classic codfish dishes, and recipes that don’t need adjusting. It’s the kind of place locals recommend without hesitation (like we’re doing right now).

Rogério do Redondo

This is a more formal restaurant, the kind of place where you find the Mayor or the President of FC Porto (local football team) having lunch and discussing business. The quality of the food is absolutely stellar! It’s a classic for weekend lunch with the family because they do very, very traditional dishes, the type Mom makes. The petiscos (small snacks) alone are a meal! The menu changes every day. If they’re serving roasted goatling, you should definitely try it, but only if you like strong-flavoured meat.

Restaurante Nova Era

For octopus rice, this is the place. It fills up fast, so arrive early. Expect generous portions, bold flavors, and a lively dining room that rarely slows down. The service is friendly, prices are fair, and the menu covers all the Portuguese classics. Busy, noisy, and absolutely worth it!

Francesinha Cafe

This place knows exactly what it’s here for: francesinha. And it delivers. The sauce is the star: rich, balanced, and made with precision. You can taste the experience. Homemade fries, quality ingredients, and a portion that leaves you satisfied, not defeated. Some call it the best in Porto. We’ll let you decide!
