Porto Beginners’ Guide: A Cultural Walking Tour [Lunch Included]

Your perfect first chapter in Porto

Our Porto Beginners’ Guide Tour is the cultural crash course every first-time visitor deserves, helping you understand the city far beyond its postcard beauty. It’s a deep dive into culture, architecture, stories, and local flavor, ending exactly as it should: gathered around a table, sharing a traditional Portuguese lunch.

Porto Unveiled: A Crash Course in Portuguese Culture

Porto didn’t just give Portugal its name: it helped shape the country’s identity. This walking tour unpacks the city’s bigger story: how it shaped Portugal, how centuries-old traditions continue to thrive, and how the people of Porto think, eat, and live today.

From world-famous monuments to corners travelers rarely stumble upon, from street myths to sociological insights, and finally a comforting meal that ties it all together… this is the perfect first chapter of your Porto story. We call it an Arts & Culture walking tour. Guests call it their “aha!” moment in the city.

This is a private walking tour in Porto, meticulously designed by an archaeologist with 17 years of fieldwork in Northern Portugal. Secure your spot today (we only open a few slots each month).

Taste Porto Food Tour is not to be missed! We had a wonderful half-day walking food tour in downtown Porto with Rita - an excellent guide from the local area. We learned so much about the history of Porto and then experienced a tremendous food market where we enjoyed several local, delicious white wines while sampling local cheeses and canned seafood. We then wrapped up our Taste Porto experience at a wonderful small restaurant where we sampled several lovely local dishes and another white wine from the Douro valley. And then an extraordinary key lime dessert. Rita made it an absolutely special experience for us. Highly recommend Taste Porto Food Tours!

Ricardo Brochado is a great guide: well informed, lively personality, smart, energetic. He took me all over Porto, to the "must see" places like the train station with its tiles but also to sites people on group tours never get to see, that truly informed me about the city's history and its people. He recommended an excellent small seafood restaurant for the next day, I was the only non-local there. Having a personal guide makes all the difference in the world in getting to know a city.

Before leaving our home city of Seattle, we found Ricardo highly recommended by Rick Steves in his travel book on Portugal. Since it was to be our first visit to Porto, we were interested in a private custom introductory walking tour of the Old Town. Ricardo was the perfect tour guide for us. We are curious about history, architecture, local food, etc and he is a passionate teacher, wonderful storyteller, very well-informed and fun! He took us to one of his favorite coffee shops along the way and to a Porto cafe for a lunch of Porto specialties. We highly recommend Ricardo!!
