With that in mind, today we&#8217;ve decided to share <strong>10 facts about Porto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top 10 Facts about Porto <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1: The name Porto comes from the expression \u201cPortus Cale\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some historians have argued that the name derives from the Greek word &#8220;kallis&#8221; &#8211; &#8216;beautiful&#8217; -, referring to the beauty of the Douro valley; others believe that the word &#8220;Cale&#8221; comes from the Latin and means &#8220;Warm Port&#8221;; Some say it&#8217;s most likely a Celtic word for &#8220;port&#8221;, \u201cthe place where boats dock\u201d.<br>Truth is: &#8220;Portus Cale&#8221; evolved to &#8220;Portucale&#8221;, which eventually became Portugal, our beloved home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Travel-quotes_Taste-Porto-1.png\" alt=\"Top 10 Facts about Porto \"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2: Porto is affectionately called \u201cInvicta\u201d and the residents are known as \u201cTripeiros\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that the people of Porto are Tripeiros because they created a wonderful dish called &#8220;Tripas \u00e0 Moda do Porto&#8221;. Why did they do it? Well, there are plenty of wonderful stories about it (that are not quite true&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/tasteporto.com\/7-tourist-traps-in-porto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">find out the real story behind this dish now<\/a>). <br>This is our favorite one: back in the 15th century, when Infante D. Henrique&#8217;s armada needed supplies for its Conquest of Ceuta (Portuguese first stronghold in Africa), the citizens of Porto provided them with every last bit of meat they had \u2013 only the tripes were left behind. From these leftovers, the people of Porto created a wonderful dish: Tripas \u00e0 Moda do Porto (Tripes Porto Style). That&#8217;s why we are called Tripeiros to this day. And yet, &#8220;Francesinha&#8221; is way more popular than Tripes.
