(According to a Portuguese Dad)

If you’re travelling to Porto with kids, you might be wondering whether the city is actually kid-friendly. The short answer? Porto is a pretty great playground. You just need to know where to look.

Forget the usual list of children’s attractions. We asked a slightly more qualified source: a Portuguese dad. Someone who actually lives here, has a Portuguese kid and knows that sometimes the best way to entertain children is to let them swim, climb, run, eat and generally burn off some energy. Here are his favourite activities for kids in Porto and beyond.

+10 Activities for Kids in Porto

1. Swim in the Ocean at Piscina das Marés

Let’s start with one of Porto’s most spectacular summer activities. Head to Leça da Palmeira, just north of Porto, and you’ll find Piscina das Marés, a saltwater swimming pool built directly into the rocks beside the Atlantic Ocean. And when we say “beside the ocean”, we mean it.

Designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, the pool blends into the rocky coastline so beautifully that it almost feels as though nature built it herself. For kids, of course, the architectural significance may not be the main attraction. But… it’s a swimming pool. In the ocean. Pretty hard to beat! Just remember that it’s seasonal, so check opening dates before you go.

Dad’s verdict: “This place is just out of this world!” And honestly, we agree!

2. Spend the Day at Amarante Water Park

If your kids hear the words “water park”, you’ve probably already won, right? About an hour from Porto, the Parque Aquático de Amarante is a mountain water park overlooking the Tâmega River. It has pools for different ages, slides, a wave pool, children’s attractions and plenty of space to spend an entire summer day.

The park has been around since 1994 and describes itself as the largest mountain water park in the Iberian Peninsula. In other words, this isn’t really a quick afternoon activity. Plan on spending the day.

Best for: hot summer days, water-loving kids and parents who don’t mind spending several hours beside a swimming pool.

3. Escape to Gerês National Park

Sometimes the best activity for kids is simply getting them out of the city. Gerês is around 90 minutes from Porto and is packed with waterfalls, natural swimming spots, mountains, villages and places to explore.

The team at Oporto Adventure Tours runs experiences in the park, and we’ve heard good things from our own team, too. It’s particularly good after a few days of sightseeing when your kids have decided that walking around another beautiful square in Porto is absolutely not happening.

Best for: adventurous families, nature lovers and children who need a break from sightseeing.

4. Get on the Douro river with a Paddleboard

Want to see Porto from a different angle? Get on the river. Onda Pura offers water-based activities including surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, and our co-founder André has tried the SUP himself: “I did the SUP in the river and it was fabulous.” That’s a pretty solid recommendation!

It’s also one of those activities that gives everyone something to talk about afterwards… especially if someone falls in. Which, let’s be honest, is part of the fun!

5. Visit the FC Porto Museum

If your child is into football, you probably don’t need much convincing. But even if you’re not a die-hard football family, the FC Porto Museum and Estádio do Dragão are worth considering.

The museum tells the story of one of Portugal’s biggest football clubs, while the stadium visit gives you access to the spaces that make football feel much more real than simply watching a match on television. The official museum experience includes interactive multimedia content through the FC Porto Museum & Tour app, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

For a young football fan, though? It’s a thing! And if football isn’t your family’s cup of tea, don’t worry. Porto has plenty of other museums to explore.

6. Take the Kids on a Porto Food Tour

Yes, a food tour counts as a kid-friendly activity. In fact, we’d argue that trying the local food is one of the best ways to experience Porto as a family. Instead of simply telling your kids about Portuguese culture, you can let them taste it.

Our Porto Food Tours take families through central Porto and the Bolhão market, stopping at local places to taste Portuguese food and drinks. Children under 13 have a discounted ticket, and younger children and babies are welcome too.

And don’t worry if you’re thinking: “But my kids aren’t exactly adventurous eaters”. Well, that’s part of the fun. And because you’re moving between different places rather than sitting through a long meal, there’s always something new around the corner.

For families who prefer to explore independently, there’s also the Food Passport, a self-guided food adventure that lets you discover Porto at your own pace, with five food tastings and four drinks included.

Dad’s top tip? Never underestimate the motivational power of a Portuguese pastry.

7. Climb the Arrábida Bridge

Now we’re getting into big-kid territory. If your children are at least 12 years old and aren’t afraid of heights, the Porto Bridge Climb is one of the most unusual activities you can do in the city. You don’t simply walk across the Arrábida Bridge. You climb its arch, around 65 metres above the Douro. You’ll climb 262 steps for some seriously good views.

Best for: adventurous teenagers and families looking for something they’ll remember long after the holiday.

7. Go Off-Road in a Buggy

Fancy getting out of Porto and doing something that involves considerably more dirt? An off-road buggy adventure in the hills around Porto could be just the ticket. The routes take you through the Serras do Porto Natural Park, with stops at places such as the preserved village of Quintandona and the Roman ruins of Castro Mozinho. It’s not just about driving around in circles, either. You’ll get countryside, mountain roads and cultural stops along the way. Just check the age requirements before booking.

Oh, and bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Actually, bring a change of clothes!

9. Try Mini Golf

For something a little less adventurous, there’s always mini golf at Passeio Alegre. It’s easy enough for younger kids, competitive enough for older ones and, crucially, something the whole family can do together. There are indoor and outdoor options around Porto, so it’s also a handy rainy-day backup.

Mini golf is one of those wonderfully simple family activities: no special skills required, relatively little walking and enough competition to keep everyone interested.

Just remember: if your child beats you, you were letting them win. Obviously.

10. Visit Neonia for a Very Different Kind of Museum

Not every museum visit has to involve quietly standing in front of paintings. Neonia is an immersive museum in central Porto combining art, science, history and interactive installations. The current experience spans 20 immersive rooms across around 1,500 square metres, with light, sound, projections, mirrors and other interactive elements. It’s particularly useful for families because you’re not simply looking at things behind glass. You’re part of the experience. Go there!

Best for: curious kids, rainy afternoons and anyone who thinks traditional museums are boring.

11. Let Them Run Wild at Jardins do Palácio de Cristal

And now for something completely different. Sometimes you don’t need to book anything. Just head to the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. There are gardens, paths, peacocks, plenty of space to run around and some fantastic views over the Douro. It’s free, it’s beautiful and sometimes that’s exactly what the family needs.

12. Visit a Library (Yes, Really!)

This may sound like an odd recommendation for a holiday in Porto. But hear us out. The Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, right by the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, is a lovely place to slow down for a while, especially if your kids enjoy books, drawing or reading.

And if they’re into music, Porto’s public phonoteca is another slightly more unusual option.

So, What Are the Best Activities for Kids in Porto?

Well, it depends on the kid. A football-mad ten-year-old and an adventurous teenager probably won’t agree on much. But that’s part of the beauty of Porto: there’s something here for everyone.

Perhaps the best advice from our Portuguese dad is this: don’t make your Porto trip all about the kids. Let them experience the city. Let them get hungry, try something new and, every now and then, decide what happens next. Because the best activities for kids in Porto aren’t necessarily the ones designed specifically for children. They’re the things that make Porto fun for everyone.

With love,
From one parent to another

[10
133
post-20969","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-activities-and-attractions","tag-what-to-do-in-porto

10+ Activities for Kids in Porto (According to a Portuguese Dad)

<meta name="description" content="Looking for activities for kids in Porto?
