Taxca is open Monday to Wednesday from 12:00 PM to 10:30 PM, and Thursday to Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 AM. Since this is a self-guided food tour, please double-check the schedule of each tasting location before you visit. We do not own any of these establishments and their schedules can change unexpectedly. If you’re a master at getting lost, simply follow this Google Maps link to Taxca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to TAXCA!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This place opened in 2013, owned by Tiago and H\u00e9lio, two brothers that wanted to bring back to life the old Porto taverns that have existed in town ever since medieval days. They were owned by farmers that sold their products here.

During the industrial revolution days, these places gained an even higher relevance, since they were the places that the working-class men visited for a cheap meal: a sandwich and a glass of wine.

After so many places opened as \u201ctascas\u201d and \u201ctabernas\u201d, these guys come along with THE real thing. No fancy stuff, no high prices, just exactly as it was before. Taxca is one of our favorite places in Porto because it\u2019s simple and honest. You get your food at the counter and you enjoy yourself.

Today, you\u2019ll be treated to a cured ham sandwich made from a leg of ham sourced from a special breed of pork called bisaro, found exclusively in the northern region of Portugal. This ham has been aged for 15 months, ensuring its exceptional quality <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your eyes are saying: where\u2019s my sandwich?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Well well, present the QR code to the waiter, to generate a code that will give you access to a cured ham sandwich. If you want to blend in with the locals, try expressing your gratitude in Portuguese: \u201cObrigada\u201d for ladies and \u201cobrigado\u201d for gentlemen. When someone responds with \u201cde nada,\u201d it means \u201cyou\u2019re welcome.\u201d

THIS IS IMPORTANT:<\/strong> Avoid ordering a bottle of water at this establishment, unless you wish to be part of a playful tradition. They have a unique way of teasing non-alcoholic beverage drinkers by ringing a bell. That\u2019s their way to embarrass non-alcohol drinkers in front of all their friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
