Tasting Location #3: Confeitaria Moura - Taste Porto

Welcome to Confeitaria Moura, a historic bakery that first opened its doors in 1892 in Santo Tirso, a city located 30km away from Porto.

At the helm of this establishment is João Pelayo, the fifth generation of his family to run the bakery. Previously working as a financial consultant in Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, João made the decision to return and contribute to the growth of his family’s business. In addition to the original shop, he has also opened a branch in Mercado Bom Sucesso and the one you are currently in.

Now, you may be wondering, what brings us here? We are here to indulge in the delightful Jesuíta, also known as the Jesuit. This pastry was created by a skilled baker who hailed from Bilbao, Spain, and joined Confeitaria Moura. The origin of the name remains a bit mysterious – some say it is because the color of the pastry resembles the garments worn by Jesuit priests, while others believe it is connected to the Spanish baker’s affiliation with the Jesuit order. Regardless, a portion of the recipe is a closely guarded secret, locked behind the door over there, accessible only to the bakers who are part of the original family, preserving the tradition and secrecy of the recipe.

You can find this pastry in other parts of town but the puff pastry part of the recipe nobody outside of the family knows about. While you’re here, we invite you to present the QR code to the waiter to enjoy the flavors of both the Jesuita and a cup of freshly brewed coffee.

Enjoy or, as we say in Portuguese, Bom Apetite!
